A man whose car was stolen by three men in south Belfast and later set on fire has told how he has been left "absolutely terrified" by the ordeal.

The victim, who did not want to be identified, said it was a "very traumatic" experience when thieves sped off in his BMW on Monday night.

He said he had been standing beside his vehicle at Strandview Street at around 8pm when he was approached by a man.

"The next thing I knew someone else was in the car revving the hell out of it," he said.

"He attempted to reverse it first and thankfully I got out of the way. Then another two jumped into the car and within 10 seconds, it was gone and they were away up the road.

"I'm completely shaken by it."

Police said around 20 minutes after the car was stolen, it was "located on fire after it had crashed at Purdysburn Road in Newtownbreda".

"A police patrol located and arrested three male suspects at the nearby Hydebank Playing Fields," a spokesman added.

The victim said he heard that the car crashed into a lamppost and was then set on fire.

"I'm just glad nobody was nobody was injured or worse, but it was very traumatic.

"I have been left absolutely terrified, it has really set me on edge."

Police said three men, aged 31, 32 and 33, arrested on suspicion of offences including aggravated vehicle taking and robbery remained in custody last night.
