A family narrowly escaped injury after shots were fired through the living room window of a house in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

A woman and young child were among those in the house in Cranbrook Court when it was targeted shortly after 10pm on Monday.

SDLP councillor Paul McCusker said local people including children were shocked after witnessing the attack.

"Those thugs who did this had no regard for anyone," he said.

"Let’s be clear, those behind this have no support from anyone. Guns need to be removed from our streets.

"Thankfully no-one was hurt but those living in the property were left very shaken and will need support following this incident.

"If anyone has any information please share it with police."

Sinn Féin councillor Ryan Murphy said it was "a particularly reckless attack".

“Thankfully no-one has been injured in this cowardly attack but we could have been looking at a real tragedy here," he said.

"Local people are shocked and disgusted by this shooting.

“I condemn those responsible unreservedly and urge anyone with information on this shooting to bring it forward to the police.”

Police have asked anyone with information to call detectives in Musgrave Street on 101.
