A MAN has had to undergo surgery for hand, arm and shoulder injuries following an assault at his home in Derry.

Police were called to the victim's home at Aranmore Avenue in the city's Creggan area around 11.30pm last night. A police spokeswoman said four masked men armed with iron bars forced their way into the victim’s flat and attacked him.

“The victim was taken to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment for injuries to his hand, arm and shoulder which will require surgery,” the spokeswoman said.

She described the incident as an “aggravated burglary” and said police were still working to establish a motive for what they said was a “vicious attack”. She appealed to anyone who was in the Aranmore Avenue area between 11pm and 11.30pm to contact detectives at Strand Road.
