A man armed with a gun tried to break into a flat in Derry last night.

The man, whose face was covered, tried to force his way into the flat on Abercorn Road in the Cityside at around 11.25pm.

Police said he may have been accompanied by a second man.

The man who was living in the flat managed to stop the armed man from getting inside.

No one was injured, police said.

The armed man was in his twenties, had a skinny build and was around 5'9''. He wore a dark beanie hat, a dark hooded top and bottoms and his mouth and nose were covered with a dark snood.

Detective Sergeant Lizzie Ballentine said: "Our enquiries into this incident are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area and saw any suspicious activity, including any individuals, or any vehicles being driven in a suspicious manner, to get in touch with detectives at Strand Road by calling 101, and quoting reference number 2102 of 29/06/20."
