SUMMER yoga sessions are to be held in a Co Down wood in a bid to raise funds for a charity dedicated to protecting woodland.

The Woodland Trust is encouraging people to join them for 'tree pose vrksasana' at Corrog Wood, at Portaferry.

It hopes the summer yoga series will combine the benefits of yoga along with being outdoors where they can also enjoy a walk through the woods afterwards.

The sessions, which take place in August, will involved small groups for a gentle practice of yoga in the spiritual centre of Corrog Wood.

Jane Campbell, who has been teaching yoga for 21 years, will lead the one-hour classes, which will include a combination of gentle movement, breath awareness and stillness in a sequence of postures conducive to an outdoor practice.

"Taking time out and connecting with nature is in itself healing and uplifting," she said.

"I am planning to share a gentle practice with people of any ability, to enhance their experience in the woodland environment.

"We will take time to savour each pose to absorb the wellbeing benefits of our yoga practice."

Lynsey Nixon of The Woodland Trust Northern Ireland said: "We are delighted to be able to offer an outdoor yoga event in one of our favourite woodlands.

"We want everyone to enjoy all the benefits of being outside in nature, and especially in the woods we look after in Northern Ireland.

"With yoga studios and gyms still closed due to the pandemic, this is a unique way to get your yoga fix with an experienced teacher present to guide you in person."

Participants are asked to bring their own mat, towel and refreshments and adhere to government recommendations by maintaining social distancing.
