GREEN Party members north and south will vote on the draft programme for government as they decide whether to enter a coalition with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

Members in the north, led by South Belfast MLA Clare Bailey, have until now remained largely quiet about the talks which have taken place in the Republic following February's general election.

The two civil war parties have made a series of concessions on transport, energy and infrastructure in order to secure Green Party support to prop them up in government.

But the position of the grassroots still remains in doubt, with a two-thirds majority needed to get the deal over the line.

"The document follows an extended period of intensive discussions between the parties," a spokesperson for the Green Party NI said.

"While there is a strong Green agenda running throughout the agreement, as always, the devil will be in the detail.

"For now, it’s a welcome development that the negotiations have resulted in a draft programme that can be put to the wider Green Party membership.

"There is now an opportunity for party members to look at the draft programme for government in some detail.

"Green Party members, including Green Party NI members, will vote to ratify or reject the Programme for Government. There is a two-thirds qualifying majority for the vote.

"Timeframes and processes around the membership vote are being finalised by party officers at present."
