The son of murdered Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane is to take a seat on the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

Michael Finucane, who works as a solicitor, is among eight people who have been proposed for appointment to serve on the Commission.

The human rights activist, whose father was murdered by loyalists in the family home in north Belfast in1989, will be joined by Jim Clarken, CEO of Oxfam Ireland, Lucy Michael, a sociologist at the Ulster University and Siobhán Mullally, Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, as new commission members.

Commission Members must be approved through resolutions of both Houses of the Oireachtas and are then formally appointed by President Michael D. Higgins.

Dr Frank Conaty, Acting Chief Commissioner, said: "These proposed appointments will bring significant practical, academic and legal experience and expertise to the work of the Commission.

"Once confirmed by the Oireachtas and President Higgins, new Commission Members will join in the work of fulfilling the Commission’s statutory mandate to protect and promote human rights and equality in the State".
