A MAN who was pinned to the ground by members of the public in west Belfast after a car crash at the weekend has been arrested on suspicion of hijacking.

Images shared on social media showed the man, who appeared to be covered in blood, being held by people following a crash in the Whiterock area on Saturday evening.

Police said that the incident began when a car was hijacked from a filling station on Finaghy Road North at around 7.30pm.

Detective Sergeant O’Flaherty said: "The male driver had left the car and gone into a fast food outlet leaving a female passenger inside the car.

"At this point a male got into the driver's seat of the car and drove off. The female passenger exited the vehicle as it pulled away and was thankfully not hurt as a result."

The car was then driven across west Belfast before it was involved in a collision at Whiterock Close, where members of the public detained the driver until police arrived.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including hijacking, driving whilst disqualified and breach of bail, and remained in police custody last night.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact officers on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
