Teenager taken to hospital with leg injury after fall from cliff path in Portstewart

A TEENAGER was taken to hospital in Co Derry after falling 30ft off a cliff path along the north Coast.

Coleraine and Ballycastle Coastguard were called out at around 8.20pm on Wednesday following a report that a person had fallen from a cliff at Portnahapple at Portstewart.

Coleraine Coastguard said the casualty, believed to be 17-year-old male, "had sustained lower leg injury".

"With assistance from Portrush RNLI, the casualty was extracted using Coastguard water rescue equipment and handed into care of NIAS.

"The PSNI helped to keep back the large crowd of onlookers who were gathering. Great teamwork by all the emergency services".

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it sent an A&E crew, a a Rapid Response Paramedic and a HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) Officer to the scene following a report that a "young man had fallen on to the rocks".

"After assessment and initial treatment, patient was taken by ambulance to Causeway hospital," he said.
