The number of deaths from coronavirus in Northern Ireland has fallen for the fifth week in a row.

A total of 757 people have died from the disease, up to May 29. 

Last week, 49 coronavirus deaths were registered, compared with 53 deaths the previous week.

The highest number of deaths registered in a week -128 fatalities - were recorded in the week ending April 24.

The figures were released by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra) this morning.

The body records all deaths where Covid-19 is mentioned on a death certificate.

Daily death figures released by the Department of Health mainly cover coronavirus fatalities in hospital.

Of the 754 deaths recorded by Nisra up to May 29, 328 (43.3%) happened in care homes; 381 (50.3%) happened in hospital and eight (1.1%) happened in hospices.

A further 40 people (5.3%) died at residential addresses or another location.

Deaths were recorded at 78 separate care homes and hospices.

More than 80% of all coronavirus deaths were amongst people aged over 75.
