A DRIVE-IN cinema is to open in Belfast this weekend to help raise funds for the fight against coronavirus.

The event will be held at the Titanic Quarter where people can enjoy movies from the comfort of their own car with all profits going to vital Covid-19 research at Queen's University Belfast.

The study is currently carrying out life-changing research to rehabilitate survivors of coronavirus.

Eight films will be shown, including favourites such as Toy Story and Back to the Future, on June 13 and 14 with room for around 2,400 cars.

Organisers of the Drive-In Cinema Belfast said there will be socially-distanced parking, with cars directed into a chequer board-style parking arrangement ensuring two metres around each vehicle and an unencumbered view of the 60 square metre screen.

Cormac OKane from Drive-In Cinema Belfast said: "This is a great opportunity for a great family experience.

"You will be safe within your car. You will see the giant screen and you will hear the film through your car radio.

"We have involved many local businesses in this event giving them an opportunity to get back to work after twelve weeks of not being able to trade.

"But more importantly the profits from the weekend go to Covid-19 research at Queens Univeristy Belfast."

The group behind Drive-In Cinema Belfast have already raised £22,000 for the research through a recent song and video based on the Adventures’ song 'Broken Land' recorded by musicians all over Ireland.

Belfast-based event management company MayWe and media and recording company Red Box got together a few weeks ago and planned the cinema event.

Karen Smyth from MayWe thanked Titanic Quarter Belfast and Belfast Harbour Commissioners for giving over the site to allow the fundraiser to take place.
