McDonald's is reopening its Bangor and Newtownards drive-thru restaurants today.

The fast food chain plans to reopen all of its drive-thrus in Ireland by this Thursday, June 4, including the 28 in the north.

McDonald’s said it is working with police and councils to maintain public safety and will close drive-thru lanes "if queues cause disruption at busier sites or put employees or customers at risk".

McDonald's said the following measures have been put in place in line with advice around the coronavirus pandemic:

  • Perspex screens at drive-thru windows
  • Payment and delivery of food will be contactless
  • Staff will have their temperature taken at the start of every shift
  • Staff will wear protective equipment
  • Limited menu and reduced opening hours with order capped at £25

The reopening of fast food restaurants for take-away has resulted in queues. Last month there was a one-mile tailback when KFC opened on the Boucher Road in south Belfast.
