DUP councillor Frank McCoubrey was formally appointed yesterday as the new lord mayor of Belfast.

Mr McCoubrey takes over the role from Sinn Féin councillor Danny Baker.

Mr Baker had been in office since December after his party colleague John Finucane stepped down from the role following his election as MP for North Belfast.

SDLP councillor Paul McCusker is the new deputy lord mayor, succeeding Alliance's Peter McReynolds.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the traditional handover ceremony of the chain of office was scaled back.

Just 18 of the 60 city councillors were allowed inside the chamber for the meeting and it was not open to the public, but proceedings were streamed online.

Mr McCoubrey said on the Covid-19 crisis: "I know there are challenges ahead in terms of how we help communities and our city recover from this unprecedented set of circumstances, but with leadership, working together and ambition we can make this year one of rebuilding for a better future."

Meanwhile, SDLP councillor Brian Tierney was appointed mayor of Derry and Strabane with the DUP's Graham Warke becoming deputy mayor.

Last night's meeting was conducted online. Mr Tierney and Mr Warke take over the civic positions from outgoing Sinn Féin mayor Michaela Boyle and SDLP deputy mayor Cara Hunter.

Ms Hunter was recently co-opted onto the SDLP's assembly team as MLA for East Derry following the death of veteran party member John Dallat.
