A suspected pipe bomb in west Belfast has been declared a hoax.

Several homes were evacuated after the suspect device was found close to a house in Clonard Gardens at around 9.45am today.

Police and British army bomb disposal experts attended the scene.

The object was taken away for further examination. It was later declared a hoax.

Clonard Gardens has now re-opened.

A police spokesman said: "We’re grateful to local people, many of whom have had their Sunday disrupted, for their patience as we worked to make the area safe."

He asked anyone with information to contact officers on 101.
