SUBWAY has announced a phased reopening of around 600 of its UK stores.

The company said a quarter of outlets in Britain and Ireland would reopen on a takeaway basis or through delivery partners including Just Eat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo.

It said it has introduced new fixtures, signage, hygiene practices and PPE equipment to ensure social distancing and protect customers, delivery drivers and staff.

They have already been tested in the small number of stores that have remained open for key workers and hospital staff over recent weeks.

Spokesman Colin Hughes said: "Everybody in our Subway family and the wider communities they serve has shown great resilience in adapting to these challenging times that we currently find ourselves in.

"We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support in anticipation of this next phase of our gradual reopening, which will enable us to continue to serve our communities and frontline workers, who have helped us all so much in recent weeks".

Meanwhile, fast food giant McDonald's is planning to reopen 30 of its drive-thrus next week.

The chain has already said it will reopen 15 of its restaurants for delivery again today.

"Next week we will begin the next phase of reopening a further 30 pilot restaurants in the UK and Ireland, offering service through the drive-thru lane from Wednesday 20 May.

"We plan to reopen all our drive-thrus by early June."

To try to keep queues shorter, the chain is also bringing in a £25 order cap to "adjust to smaller teams and social distancing in our kitchens".
