A 15-year-old patient brightened up everyone's day at Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children with a stunning painting on the glass door of her room.

Cara O'Brien spent 11 nights in the Allen Ward for children with breathing problems and during her time there painted flowers and hearts on the panes of a door opening to the outside of the building.

"I just used regular paint," the Our Lady & St Patrick's College Knock pupil said from her home in the Four Winds area of south Belfast after being discharged earlier this week.

"I wasn't able to be out in the sunshine in my garden at home so I decided to paint a garden."

Her mother Jacqueline said it had only taken the teenager about half an hour to transform the glass with multicoloured hearts and flowers drawn by free hand.

Cara later replaced the hearts with a cherry blossom tree like the one which she has in her own garden, although she has still been too ill since returning home to go outside.

The schoolgirl has chronic suppurative lung disease which leaves her battling serious chest infections for four months of the year. She had already been 'shielding' from infection for around a month before going into hospital.

"All the staff, the nurses, the doctors, auxiliaries, everyone was so good with Cara and would have taken time when they were passing to talk to her," her mother said.

"We hope they're able to keep the picture up for the next child going into the room. Many of the children in Allen Ward have cystic fibrosis and can be very sick."

A spokesman for Belfast Trust put a picture of the door up on Facebook saying she had "done a fantastic job".

"The door looks brilliant from the inside and outside, and has brightened up the whole room. Great work Cara."
