A group of GPs in Co Tyrone has said their practices have not been given enough personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

GPs at Omagh Primary Care Centre said supplies of PPE were "limited and inadequate", despite repeated calls to the Department of Health.

And they said that without donations from voluntary and community organisations, businesses and nearby schools, it would have been "extremely difficult" for them to offer a proper service to patients.

"We endeavour at all times to provide a safe, efficient and full service and to maintain the maximum protection to both our patients and staff," they said in a statement.

"Without these contributions this would have proved extremely difficult."

The GPs said the Department of Health had only provided a "limited supply of PPE" to their practices.

"This has been minimal and far below the level required to ensure the continuing safety of staff and patients," they said.

"Repeated appeals and requests to the Department of Health for more PPE have been sent, however, practices have only been supplied with limited and inadequate stocks.

"We feel that this is unacceptable and places our patients, staff and their families at increased risk."

They called on politicians to demand proper supplies of PPE for GPs, nurses and other primary care staff.

"The GPs and staff also convey their thanks to the community for continued social distancing which has prevented the spread of the virus, minimised hospital admissions and ultimately has saved many lives," they said.

A spokesman for the Department for Health said: "All GP practices in Northern Ireland are able to order replenishment supplies of PPE items recommended in current guidance for use during  direct patient care of possible or confirmed COVID-19 cases in the primary care setting, in an individual’s own home, or in a community care home.

"This PPE is ordered from the BSO Procurement and Logistics Service and then delivered to practices in a timely fashion."
