A MAN was allegedly stabbed in the neck with part of a soft drink can following a chase in south Belfast, a court heard yesterday.

He was taken to hospital after police were called to the scene near Botanic Avenue on Tuesday night.

Jonathan Neeson-Grendon appeared at the city's Magistrates Court charged with causing grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.

The 44-year-old, of Canterbury Street in Belfast, also faces a further count of assaulting another man who claimed he was punched.

One of the alleged victims required surgery for a deep wound to his neck, according to a PSNI officer.

She said part of a Coke tin with a sharp edge was found during searches carried out after Neeson-Grendon was arrested.

Another piece of can with blood and some hair on it was then discovered in the nearby Cromwell Road area.

During interviews the accused said he had been threatened and pursued in the street by the wounded man.

Defence solicitor Brendan Blaney described his client as a vulnerable individual who provided a full account of what happened.

"It's very clear that the alleged injured party had been threatening Mr Grendon in the lead up to this incident," he contended.

Mr Blaney said the accused had expressed his concerns in 999 calls to police on Monday and Tuesday, and also claimed he had been head-butted.

With no statement of complaint from the alleged victim, District Judge Amanda Henderson granted bail to Neeson-Grendon.

She banned him from contacting the other man, and also ordered: "He's not to be in possession of any item adapted for use in an assault."

Neeson-Grendon is due to appear back in court in June.
