IRELAND'S three largest Protestant Churches last night advised their members that all services and parish gatherings should be suspended as they moved to respond to the spread of coronavirus.

In a further indication of just how dramatically all aspects of life are being affected by the public health crisis, there will be no public worship in Church of Ireland, Presbyterian or Methodist churches for the foreseeable future.

Catholic dioceses had already announced a similar approach.

The Protestant denominations issued their advice after consulting with each other.

In its statement, the Church of Ireland said that all parish organisations and activities should cease "until further notice".

Where a meeting such as a parish select vestry was unavoidable, it should follow public health guidance.

However, parishes are being encouraged to conduct 'virtual meetings' using email or other digital technology.

And while services are being suspended, churches should pursue "creative means of enabling members to avail of worship resources".

"If appropriate, church buildings can be left open so that parishioners can visit for private prayer provided public health guidelines on hygiene and sanitation can be observed," said the Church of Ireland.

Funerals and weddings can proceed as long as numbers "are kept as low as possible".

"Consideration should be given to all funerals being private (for close family and friends only), with no public announcement of the funeral arrangements.

"Where there are formal government restrictions on numbers attending indoor or outdoor events, these should be strictly adhered to in all situations, including both weddings and funerals."
