SIX new independent members have been appointed to the Policing Board.

The new appointees will take up their positions on April 1.

They include former Lisburn and Castlereagh DUP councillor Janet Gray.

Ms Gray is also a former four time World Disabled Water Ski Champion.

She will be joined by former engineer Michael Atkinson and ex-chief executive of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, Edgar Jardine.

Chair of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Carmel McKinney, who was also recently appointed to the Equality Commission, has also been handed a seat along with Frank McManus, who worked in the telecommunications industry for 40 years.

Chair of the Northern Ireland Civil Service Commission Deirdre Toner will take up the last independent position.

Justice minister Naomi Long said: "Having an effective and efficient board which holds the Police Service of Northern Ireland to account is vital.

"I would like pay tribute to the five outgoing independent members for the significant contribution they have made to policing in Northern Ireland and their personal commitment to the Policing Board and its work."

Independent members of the Policing Board are appointed for a term of either three or four years.

They receive renumeration of £15,000 per annum and they are required to commit to a minimum of four days a month.
