A RESIDENT at a north Belfast tower block has accused the Housing Executive of “paying lip service” to concerns about the building after rainwater poured into his flat following heavy rain.

Liam Seanghán Ó hAirmheadhaigh, who lives in Maeve House in the New Lodge, said residents have complained about the problem in the past and that water regularly flows down his walls during heavy rain.

Mr Ó hAirmheadhaigh has lived in the 12th floor apartment for around 14 years. He believes the water is coming from the tower’s flat roof, which is immediately above his apartment.

He said every time there is prolonged rain he is forced to place buckets throughout his home to catch the water.

He has now called for a pitched roof to be installed on his tower along with weather proof cladding.

Similar work has been carried out on neighbouring tower blocks in recent years.

He said that people living on other floors in Maeve House have also encountered problems and said rent should be reduced until repairs are carried out.

Mr Ó hAirmheadhaigh referred to work he says is currently taking place in a garden outside Maeve House costing thousands of pounds “and they can’t fix a leak in the roof”.

“Some people are not complaining any more, why would you complain when there is nothing being done about it,” he said.

“Every time I complain they pay lip service.”

The Housing Executive did not provide a response.
