A police investigation was under way last night after a man and woman aged in their twenties were killed in a road traffic collision in Co Antrim.

The pair were travelling in a yellow Citroen car which was involved in a collision with a white Honda car on the Duneany Road in Glarryford in the Ballymena area.

The crash happened at around 2.05pm.

Paramedics and the Air Ambulance were sent to the scene however the female driver and the male passenger of the Citroen were pronounced dead at the scene.

Inspector Marty Mullan said: "The two-vehicle collision on the Duneany Road in Glarryford was reported to us at approximately 2.05pm and involved a yellow Citroen and white Honda.

"Officers along with other emergency services attended and sadly the female driver and male passenger of the Citroen were pronounced dead at the scene.

"The female driver of the Honda was taken to hospital".

Inspector Mullan added: "We are appealing to anyone who may have been on the Duneany Road this afternoon, prior to or around the time of the collision, or anyone who recorded any dashcam or mobile phone footage that could potentially help our investigation to get in touch with us".

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said two Rapid Response Paramedics, one BASICS doctor and four emergency crews were sent to the scene.

"The charity Air Ambulance, with HEMS crew on board, was also tasked to the incident," he said.

"Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was taken by ambulance to Antrim Area Hospital".

TUV Councillor Timothy Gaston said he was "deeply saddened" to hear of the fatalities.

"One can only imagine the pain which has been visited upon their loved ones," he said.

"The air ambulance along with ambulances crews, fire brigade and police arrived on the scene but unfortunately there was nothing they could do.

"We do not know the circumstances of this accident but once again it is a reminder of how dangerous the roads can be. I would appeal for all road users to take extra care when travelling. We have already had more than enough tragedy and I don’t want to see any more lives cut short".

Meanwhile, the emergency services were last night tasked to a one-vehicle road traffic collision on the M1 motorway following a report that a vehicle was on its side, citybound, between Black's Road and Stockman's Lane.
