Ice cream van stolen in west Belfast

Police have appealed for information after an ice cream van was stolen in west Belfast.

The vehicle had been stopped by the driver in Lagmore View at around 9pm last night when two males approached the van.

It was reported there was a verbal exchange before the two suspects got inside the van and drove it towards Mount Eagles Road, onto Lagmore Avenue and Teeling Avenue, where the vehicle was found abandoned.

There was a report it had collided with a parked vehicle and a man who was on Teeling Avenue at the time was assaulted.

He was checked by paramedics at the scene.

A sum of money was reported as having been taken from the van and a dash cam was damaged.

Police arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol in breath and taking a motor vehicle without authority. A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drug, taking a motor vehicle without authority and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. 

Both men remain in custody this morning. 

Police have appealed for anyone who may have captured footage of the van being driven from 9pm onwards or has information regarding the assault on Teeling Avenue to contact them on 101.
