CO Meath is set to become the location for a new movie written and starring Hollywood actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

The Last Duel will be filmed in the Bective Bridge area, close to the River Boyne, which was made famous in Mel Gibson's 1995 film Braveheart.

Star Wars star Adam Driver and Emmy award winning actress Jodie Comer of Killing Eve fame are also set to star in the historical drama, which will be directed by Ridley Scott.

Filming is expected to take place in Co Meath from March 23 and 30, according to reports in the Meath Chronicle.

The movie is based on the 2004 book, The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager, and is described as "an epic tale of betrayal and justice".

It tells the story of the last officially recognised judicial duel in France in 1386, which saw a "trial by combat pitting a knight against a squire accused of violating the knight's beautiful young wife".

Damon and Affleck will play two friends, Norman knight Jean de Carrouges and the squire Jacques Le Gris.

Le Gris accuses his friend of raping his wife Margerite de Carrouges, but when no-one believes her, the soldier appeals to the King of France to undo a decision handed down by Count Pierre d’Anencon, which favored Le Gris.

The two men must fight a duel to the death.

If Jean de Carrouges loses, his wife will be burned at the stake for punishment for her false accusation.

Affleck and Damon, who previously collaborated on Good Will Hunting, have been involved in writing the script alongside Oscar-nominated writer and director Nicole Holofcener.

The movie is due for release in January 2021.
