A suspicious object in the grounds of a former school in Lurgan was being examined by police yesterday, less than a week after the discovery of a viable bomb in the town.

The public were asked to avoid the area at Cornakinnegar Road while a clearance operation took place.

Last week a bomb, claimed by the Continuity IRA, was found in the Silverwood Industrial Estate several days after an initial warning about a device being placed on a lorry due to travel by ferry from Belfast to Scotland.

The 'Brexit Day' bomb was finally located on Tuesday evening on the trailer unit of a lorry owned by a haulage company that specialises in transporting frozen goods.

DUP Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart condemned those behind the latest alert.

"Whether real or hoax those behind this are puppets to their master who is from a different era and is trying take Northern Ireland in the wrong direction.

"The police will catch these people eventually and they will spend the best days of their lives in prison.

"Like so many caught up in paramilitaries in Northern Ireland, they will have wasted their lives.

"I hope the community will help the police and security services catch the people who are the terror puppeteers and put them out of business for good. It will help the entire community".

An alert was also declared in Portadown yesterday afternoon following the discovery of a suspicious object.

Diversions were put in place around Hanover Street and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Meanwhile, detectives from the PSNI’s Terrorism Investigation Unit investigating a security alert in Omagh on Friday evening arrested a 26-year-old man.

He was later released following questioning, with police saying the matter remains under investigation.
