A 41-year-old man killed in an accident in Co Antrim has been named locally as Francis Watson.

The father-of-three died on Thursday after the white Volkswagen Golf he was driving collided with a silver Kia Picanto on Drones Road, near Armoy at around 6.45pm.

Mr Watson, who lived in Ballycastle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives investigating the circumstances of the collision have asked "anyone who witnessed the collision, or who was driving in the area and has dash-cam footage which could assist our enquiries to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference number 1645 06/02/20".

His funeral will be held at St.Patrick's and St.Brigid's Church, Ballycastle tomorrow.

Mr Watson is survived by his children Jessica, Cian and Eoin, partner Roisin, parents Gerard and Mary and brother Patrick.

Sinn Féin councillor Cara McShane said news of his death "has shocked our community".

"This tragic accident has left people reeling and I want to pass on my condolences to his family, who are well known and respected across north Antrim.

"I also understand the PSNI has urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward and I want to echo this appeal."

DUP North Antrim assembly member Mervyn Storey said his "thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends."

"The PSNI recently reported that the number of fatalities on our roads over the Christmas period has risen sharply compared to the same period last year. It is a matter of deep regret that lives are continuing to be lost in this way.

"I want to pay tribute to the emergency services for their dedication in dealing with this incident and encourage anyone who may have information on the circumstances to contact the PSNI."

Meanwhile a teenage boy was left in a serious condition in hospital after being struck by a car in a separate road collision on the outskirts of Belfast during morning rush hour.

The 15-year-old was struck by a white Ford Focus at around 8.45am yesterday.

Detectives are appealing for information from the driver of a white Vauxhall Corsa "who is believed to have witnessed the incident and may be able to assist with police enquiries."

A spokeswoman said anyone else who may have seen what happened or may have dash cam footage available to contact police at Woodbourne on 101, quoting reference number 272 07/02/20.
