A 14-year-old boy who died after being struck by a car in Downpatrick on Sunday evening "always had a smile on his face".

Deaglan Moran, a Year 10 pupil at De La Salle High School, died in the collision on Flying Horse Road in the town at around 6.30pm.

His school released a statement yesterday saying their thoughts and prayers are with Deaglan, his family and school friends.

There is expected to be a large turnout of friends at his funeral in St Colmcille's Church, Downpatrick tomorrow.

Requiem Mass will be at 11am with interment afterwards in Struell Cemetery.

A poignant family notice confirming his death described Deaglan as "dearly loved son of Lenny and Fiona and much loved brother of Meaghan", adding that he "will be lovingly remembered by his sorrowing family and many friends".

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard said there is "shock and sadness in the local community following the death " and offered his condolences to family and friends.

One friend, paying tribute on social media, said Deaglan "always had a smile on his face and always was the boy who helped u if u were feeling down".

PSNI Inspector Brian Mills asked for witnesses to come forward.

"In particular, I would appeal to anyone who was in the Flying Horse Road area on Sunday evening around 6.30pm and witnessed the collision to contact officers in Downpatrick on 101.

"If you were driving in the area and might have dashcam footage of the incident, we would also like to hear from you as you may be able to help our investigation into what happened."
