A petrol bomb attack on a house in Coleraine has been described as "reckless".

Residents of the property at Lodge Road have been praised for helping to prevent the spread of fire after the house was targeted at around 1.35am yesterday.

Damage was caused to the living room floor and furniture after a device was thrown through a ground floor window.

Detective Inspector Peter McKenna said: "Further damage was prevented by the quick actions of the occupants.

"We are extremely fortunate no one was injured in what was a reckless act.

"We are working to establish a motive for the attack, and would appeal to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area around 1.35am, including any cars being driven in a suspicious manner, to contact CID in Coleraine."

UUP councillor William McCandless said there was a sense of "shock" in the area.

He told The Irish News: "I thought we had put those days behind us and I'm mystified as to why this is happening in our community in this day and age. I would urge anyone who knows anything about those responsible to contact police."
