PIPE bombs have been found in Co Antrim and Derry.

Several homes were evacuated this afternoon after a pipe bomb was found in the garden of a house on Mulderg Drive in Newtownabbey.

Part of Mulderg Drive and Gunnell Hill were closed as the bomb was made safe and taken away for examination.

Detective Sergeant Will Arnott said the device was viable.

"I would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in Mulderg Drive recently or who has any information which could help us with our enquiries to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101 quoting reference number 684 30/01/20," he said.

Roads were later reopened and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Meanwhile, police found two exploded pipe bombs during a security alert in Derry.

The bombs were found in Caw Close in the Waterside this morning.

Loud bangs were heard in the area between 10pm and midnight on Wednesday. No one was injured but minor damage was caused to the front windows of two houses.

In west Belfast, shots were fired through the front door of a house in the Ballymurphy area.

Several shots were fired at the house in Glenalina Gardens at around 8.15pm today.

There were no reports of any injuries.
