A MAN has been arrested in connection with the ill-treatment of patients at Muckamore Abbey Hospital.

The 34-year-old was arrested by detectives from the PSNI's Public Protection Branch in the Antrim area on Tuesday morning.

To date, four men and one woman have been arrested by detectives investigating allegations of the ill-treatment of patients at Muckamore.

Nobody has been charged in what police say is the biggest adult safeguarding probe of its kind, with a specialist PSNI team viewing 300,000 hours of CCTV footage from wards.

Some 40 staff members have been suspended from the scandal-hit hospital.

In November, The Irish News revealed nursing resignations and retirements at the hospital have soared, with dozens of departures since the beginning of last year.

The Belfast trust has repeatedly apologised for the distress caused by the abuse investigation, with chief executive Martin Dillon insisting they had worked "tirelessly" " to ensure existing care is "safe and compassionate".

Secretary of Secretary Julian Smith has apologised to families over the alleged abuse.
