A SERVICE of thanksgiving is due to be held in Co Antrim for a long-standing cleric and award-winning floral artist.

The Very Rev William McMillan from Dunmurry, a minister for 54 years, died on Sunday.

'Rev Mac', as he was affectionately known, was the former minister of First Presbyterian Church (Non-Subscribing) in Dunmurry, where he served for 42 years. He retired at the age of 80.

The father-of-four was also known in horticultural circles, winning awards as a floral artist. He also had a plant named in his honour by the Northern Ireland Group of Flower Arrangement Societies.

Rev McMillan was awarded an MBE in 1999 for his services to charity through his floral art and he was also presented with the Albert Schweitzer Award for promoting religious freedom.

A service of thanksgiving will be held in First Presbyterian (Non-Subscribing) Church, Dunmurry on Thursday at 1pm followed by a committal in the adjoining burial ground.

He is survived by his wife Sheila and children David, Alastair, Jane and Andrew and wider family circle.
