HIGH street retailer Debenhams has said it is an “equal opportunities employer” after it settled a sex discrimination case with a Co Down transgender woman.

Newry woman Ava Moore took a case against the store which this week agreed to pay her £9,000 with no admission of liability.

The case was launched after the Newry woman, who was supported by the Equality Commission, applied for a temporary sales assistant job with the store before Christmas in 2018.

Despite believing she had done well during her job interview, Ms Moore was later told she had been unsuccessful.

She later received an anonymous email alleging that she had been unsuccessful due to the fact that she is a transgender woman.

In a statement Debenhams said it is committed to equality.

“We have agreed a settlement on the basis of no liability on the part of Debenhams said they are committed to promoting equality,” it said.

“We are an equal opportunities employer committed to promoting equality and diversity within the business and throughout the sector.

“Decisions on recruitment, training, promotion and employment conditions are based solely on personal competence and performance.”
