POLICE have appealed for information following the arrest of a man for alleged assault at New Year's Day hunt in Co Down.

A 55-year-old man was taken into custody by police following an incident on Wednesday at the Darragh Road, Darraghcross, near Saintfield, Co Down.

It is understood the arrest took place after alleged common assault on a 45-year-old who was among a group attempting to disrupt North Down Hunt's annual January 1 hunt.

Police are also investigating an alleged theft relating to the same incident.

The 55-year-old man has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The PSNI said it was seeking to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Sergeant Donnelly said: "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident which is believed to have occurred around 11.45am on Tuesday, 1 January to contact police at Downpatrick on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1234 01/01/20."
