Victim of shooting had been targeted before

THE victim of a paramilitary-style shooting in the Ballymurphy area of west Belfast had been targeted a year ago in a similar attack.

The man in his 20s was shot in both legs on Monday evening after two masked men entered the house in Divismore Park area.

An older female relative in the house at the time was not injured, but was said to have been left extremely traumatised by the gun attack.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries - the second time he has been the target of a paramilitary-style shooting.

A man in his 40s was also shot in the legs at the same address in January 2018.

Chief Inspector Gary Reid appealed for information about Monday's shooting, saying: "Attacks like this are reckless and involve a high and sustained level of violence.

"Those carrying out these attacks don’t care about the psychological damage they are causing to those they have injured or anyone witnessing these attacks.

"Those who are involved in violent criminal acts of this nature do not represent the interests of any community nor contribute anything to it.

"They do it to try and exert influence or gain control in communities.

"I would appeal to anyone who has any information that could assist us with our enquiries to contact detectives at Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101."

Local politicians including Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey and People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll also condemned the attack.
