POLICE have named a Co Down man killed in a road traffic accident on Saturday as father of four Shane Cunningham.

The 38-year-old died almost instantly after being struck by a black Renault Clio on the A2 Warrenpoint Road, close to Newry at around 5am on Saturday.

He was originally from Kilkeel, but lived at Ryanstown Road in Burren, with his wife two children and two step children.

A family notice described Mr Cunningham as a "dearly loved husband and loving father".

A NI Ambulance Service spokesperson said a call was received at 5.21am on Saturday that a pedestrian had been knocked down and dispatched two emergency crews to the scene. No one was taken to hospital.

PSNI Inspector Phil Robinson said: "Our enquiries are continuing and our thoughts are with those impacted by this tragic incident, which occurred approximately two miles from Newry.

"We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dash-cam footage available to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 445 21/12/19."
