A CO Tyrone father-of-two who died after a road crash was last night described as "a true gentleman with the biggest heart of gold".

Football coach Noel Sweeney (57) from Coalisland died from injuries he sustained in a collision in Moy on Wednesday night.

Police said his van was involved in a collision with a fallen tree and two other vehicles on Trewmount Road at around 8pm.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "There were three occupants in the van and all three received medical treatment, but sadly the driver passed away in hospital.

"Some of the occupants of the other vehicles sustained injuries, not thought to be life-threatening at this time."

Tributes have been paid to Mr Sweeney, who has co-managed Coalisland Athletic FC for several years and was heavily involved in volunteer work for local charities.

His son Aaron paid tribute on social media, telling of his devastation at his father's tragic death.

"My rock, my guide, I loved you so my heart is broke that you must go," he said.

"My father, my friend - a bond so true for now and ever will I miss you."

A niece, Leah Forbes, also paid tribute, describing how they had "lost the heart of our family".

"Things will never be the same without you, a true gentleman with the biggest heart of gold anyone could have," she said.

"I'll never forget the memories you gave us all - you were the funniest man I ever met in my life."

In a statement, the Mid Ulster Football League said: "Very sad news this morning as we learned of the tragic passing of former Coalisland Athletic FC manager, Noel Sweeney, passing on the sincere condolences of all in Mid Ulster football to his circle of family and friends, and to all in the Coalisland club. Rest in peace, Noel."

Cookstown Youth FC also said it was "saddened to hear of the passing of Noel Sweeney, a coach with Coalisland Young Stars.

"Everyone at Cookstown Youth send their deepest condolences to everyone at Coalisland Young Stars FC and the family of Noel."

Numerous tributes have been posted to Mr Sweeney, with many describing him as an "absolute gentleman".

A friend, who previously worked with him in a Cookstown carpet shop, said he was "great craic, customers loved his wit, funniest man I ever met".

"He was a great help to me building my business and I will really miss him.

"I'm really gutted, a great fella and a true gentleman, would have done anything for you."

Another said he was a "good man and one of the funniest people I've ever met", while another said "one of life's genuine gentlemen".
