A FORMER SDLP assembly member has again said he plans to vote for the DUP because of the party's anti-abortion stance.

One-time Larne mayor Danny O'Connor said he would be casting his vote in East Antrim for Sammy Wilson.

"I never thought I would be in this position where the only candidate who will uphold my views on the sanctity of life and holy matrimony would be from a party I opposed for so many years at the ballot box," he told the Belfast Telegraph..

"I am saddened that I am forced into this position, but if I have to choose between morals and politics, morals win."

Mr O'Connor, who was once chairman of the SDLP's Cavehill/Fortwilliam branch, also urged voters to back Nigel Dodds in North Belfast.

In 2012, he previously stated his intention to vote for the DUP because the party opposed abortion and same sex marriage.
