Taxi driver 'choked' before vehicle hijacked

A TAXI driver was assaulted and "choked" at the wheel of his car before his attackers stole his vehicle in Co Tyrone.

Three men got into the taxi at around 2.25am on Sunday morning at the Platers Hill area of Coalisland, and after travelling a short distance the driver was asked to take them to a new destination.

After refusing their request, the driver was attacked, with police describing how he was "choked" before being struck in the head. He managed to escape the car - a silver-coloured Skoda Octavia - before the three men drove off in it.

The vehicle was later found abandoned on the Gortgonis Road. Police have described one of the men as wearing a black top while another was described as smaller in build with a goatee beard.

A PSNI spokesperson urged anyone with information to come forward, adding: "As you can imagine, this was a traumatic ordeal, which has left a man badly shaken."
