A former Co Down journalist who worked on several newspaper titles in Northern Ireland has died aged 92.

Harry McCandless from Dromore passed away peacefully in hospital on Monday.

He began his career with the Leader in Dromore and entered the Dromore Weekly Times as a cub reporter in 1946.

But after just a year he decided to branch out on his own in the printing business and founded McCandless Print in Banbridge.

Mr McCandless started a monthly paper, the Banbridge Review, which was launched as a weekly in 1950, and went on to work for numerous titles including the Portadown News and the former Lisburn Herald, where he was deputy editor.

He also provided news coverage for the broadcasting media and throughout the 1970s and 80s was a familiar voice on Downtown Radio as well as a correspondent for the Press Association.

He was also a past chairman of the Northern Ireland Press Correspondents Association and a member of the mid-Ulster branch of the National Union of Journalists.

Mr McCandless is survived by his wife Josephine and children Maynard, Peter and Amanda.
