ALLIANCE has condemned posters in Bangor which link the party to the IRA.

The leaflet includes the Sinn Féin and Alliance Party logos and an illustration of masked gunmen.

It claims that voting Alliance means the "IRA win", adding: "Don't let the IRA have the last laugh."

Alliance deputy leader Stephen Farry described the leaflets, which that party said have appeared in several locations in Bangor, as "fake news".

The party's Westminster election candidate for North Down urged other candidates in the constituency to "unequivocally condemn these posters".

"Not only are these posters disingenuous but they are also dangerous, placing myself and other Alliance candidates, as well as our canvassers and supporters, at risk," he said.

"This fake news and gutter politics is wrong and it needs to stop immediately, right across Northern Ireland."

It follows controversy over loyalist banners targeting Sinn Féin's John Finucane and the SDLP's Claire Hanna.

In May before the council elections, the UUP faced criticism for an east Belfast election leaflet which claimed Alliance had a record of "voting with the IRA's political wing".

The UUP centrally distanced itself from the leaflet and veteran party councillor Jim Rodgers was later sanctioned over the controversy.
