DUP MLA Carla Lockhart was last night named as the party's Westminster candidate in Upper Bann.

Her selection ends speculation that a more senior DUP figure was set to contest the seat previously held by David Simpson.

Both DUP leader Arlene Foster and the party's MEP Diane Dodds had been linked with the Upper Bann candidacy in recent days.

Mr Simpson, who held the seat from 2005 when he defeated the then Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble, said earlier this week that he would not be seeking re-election.

The former DUP Upper Bann MP's extra marital affair with a party colleague had been exposed by a Sunday tabloid.

The DUP chief executive Timothy Johnston wrote to party members in Upper Bann earlier this week saying that, because there were not 40 paid up members in the constituency, candidate selection would be conducted by "party officers".

Speaking last night, Ms Lockhart said she had a record in the constituency of "hard work and delivery".

"I will be seeking a mandate to continue this in Westminster where I will work alongside colleagues in parliament, the assembly and council to deliver for the benefit of everyone in Upper Bann," she said.

DUP leader Arlene Foster welcomed the selection and urged voters in Upper Bann to rally behind Ms Lockhart.

"Northern Ireland needs MPs at Westminster speaking up on the issues that matter," she said.

"We also need an assembly and executive here in Northern Ireland working and delivering on the needs of our community."

Ms Lockhart will defending a DUP majority of 7,992.
