'Viable pipe bomb' found in east Belfast garden

A VIABLE pipe bomb-type device was discovered yesterday in the garden of a house in east Belfast.

Police were called to Sandbrook Grove yesterday afternoon following a report of a suspicious object.

Bomb-disposal experts examined the object and declared it to be a "viable pipe bomb-type device", police said.

The device was made safe and removed for further examination.

Detectives are working to establish a motive for the incident.

Residents were evacuated from properties in Sandbrook Grove and neighbouring Sandbrook Gardens during the security alert.

Connsbrook Avenue and Sandbrook Park were also closed to traffic while police examined the scene.

Police urged anyone who witnessed any unusual activity in the area to phone Musgrave Police Station on 101 quoting reference 1295 01/11/19, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
