HUNDREDS of pupils and teachers have been given a taste of how to bring Chinese language and culture into the classroom.

Children from 10 primaries took part in Schools Think China at St Anne's Cathedral yesterday.

The event, a partnership between British Council Northern Ireland and the Confucius Institute at Ulster University, saw young people take part in several workshops.

These included learning a traditional lion dance, calligraphy, the art of Chinese face mask changing and creating silk fans.

Pupils also experienced live Chinese opera, musical performances and dance with traditional bamboo flute accompaniment, while sampling some traditional dishes.

In addition, teachers were provided with information on how to avail of a Chinese language assistant for their school, partner with a school in China and how to get involved in the annual Mandarin speaking competition.
