THERE have been calls for more garda officers to be put on the streets after a woman, reported to be tourist, was robbed at gunpoint outside one of Dublin’s most-visited attractions.

CCTV last night emerged of a woman being threatened with a gun near the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin on Monday.

The footage shows a man armed with what is believed to be a gun pointing the weapon at a woman in Long's Place in the Liberties area of the city at around 6pm.

An eyewitness told RTÉ that a number of men were involved.

He said the men were "targeting this woman and they were just shouting at her".

"They wanted her purse and money," he said.

"She was really panicked and she was screaming and I could see people were hiding behind the cars."

The eyewitness said the armed man pointed the gun at the woman's face.

He said he rang Gardaí and told them there was an armed man on the street.

Gardaí say they are investigating a robbery in which two men, armed with what is believed to be a gun, allegedly stole a phone from a pedestrian.

Sinn Féin’s Justice and Equality spokesman Martin Kenny TD said the incident demanded "urgent action".

"We are hearing from the Garda Commissioner that his re-organisation of the Garda Siochána will increase visible garda presence on the streets of our towns and cities," he said.

"I call on the minister for justice to ensure that the necessary resources are available to the Commissioner to provide the protection that An Garda Siochána, the guardians of the peace, exists to provide".
