THE Ulster Unionists' leadership contest has been brought forward, with the party's new figurehead set to be chosen next month.

When Robin Swann announced a fortnight ago that he was stepping down, he said he would remain leader until the next scheduled AGM in February.

However, the North Antrim MLA said that after consulting with "family and close colleagues", he has decided to bring the process forward.

The leadership contest will now take place on Saturday November 9 at Templepatrick's Hilton Hotel.

The announcement comes as Mr Swann's predecessor Mike Nesbitt ruled himself out from standing again for the UUP leadership.

The Strangford MLA, who led the UUP from 2012 to 2017, resigned after the party saw its number of Stormont seats fall from ten to six.

Mr Nesbitt has also revealed that he had been diagnosed with a heart condition.

The former UTV anchorman had been linked with the party leader's role in recent weeks.

But he has ruled second run for the party leadership, although he said he will continue as assembly member.

On Twitter he posted: "In 2015, I was diagnosed with heart disease. I am so grateful to the NHS for their help and support.

"The latest review makes clear the stresses of leadership are beyond me at present. I thank those kind enough to encourage me to try again. My ego loves you ."

South Antrim MLA Steve Aiken has said he will put his name forward for the post while Upper Bann MLA Doug Beattie has said he is considering contesting.
