THE PSNI returned to the scene of the kidnap of businessman Kevin Lunney last night in Co Fermanagh to appeal to the public for information on the brutal attack.

Mr Lunney was abducted after his car was rammed by a masked gang who bundled him into the boot of a black Audi and took him 23 miles across the border to Co Cavan.

The Quinn Industrial Holding director was savagely beaten, suffered a broken leg, had finger nails pulled out and had the letters QIH carved into his chest with a knife.

The cross-border gang are thought to be made up of a number of people known to police including those with links to republican organisations including the Continuity IRA.

Gardaí believe Mr Lunney was taken through Swanlinbar, Killeshandra and Ballinagh by his attackers and beaten before being dumped at the side of a road at Cornafean in Co Cavan.

The road between Ballinagh and Gowna, just off the N55 in Cavan, reopened yesterday as Gardaí continue to carry out a search of an area of rural area.

This includes a scrapyard in the search for a number of vehicles, including a white van and black Audi.

A horse box where they suspect Mr Lunney may have been tortured and beaten in, forms a major part of the investigation.

Specialist officers from Gardaí headquarters were involved in examining the animal container.

Despite it appearing to have been cleaned it is understood that evidence, including traces of blood were recovered and are being forensically examined.

A number of sheds and outhouses were also searched in the Cavan area in recent days and both PSNI and Garda helicopters have been circling the border area.

PSNI officers conducted a road stop at the scene of the kidnap close to Derrylin yesterday.

Detective Chief Inspector Julie Mullan said: "This was an abhorrent attack on a local hardworking businessman.

"As a result of this attack, they have been left with brutal, life changing injuries across their face and body and will undoubtedly be extremely traumatised by the experience.

"We continue to work closely with our colleagues in An Garda Siochana and the joint investigation is progressing.

"The savages who carried out this attack have no place in our society and we are doing everything in our power to bring them to justice.

"We would ask if anyone remembers anything suspicious, no matter how small, to please let us know. It could be relevant to the investigation.

"I am appealing to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity or saw a silver BMW or a black saloon Audi being driven in the Derrylin, Fermanagh/Swanlinbar, Cavan areas last Tuesday to contact us or our colleagues in An Garda Siochana.

" I want to speak to the driver of a silver Ford Focus who was travelling on the Stragowna Road, out of Derrylin, last Tuesday at approximately 6.40pm around the time when the victim was kidnapped.

"The driver had to slow down when a black Audi pulled out in front of them on to the road. If you are that driver, please come forward and talk to us.

“Anyone with any information should contact us on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1748 of 17/09/19".
