BROADCASTER Stephen Clements is to take over the BBC Radio Ulster slot left vacant after Sean Coyle was axed.

Speculation had been mounting that the former Q Radio breakfast radio host was being lined up for the 10.30am morning after Mr Coyle revealed last month that his popular programme had been dropped.

The cancellation caused anger amongst the veteran broadcaster's fans and prompted a string of complaints, including from SDLP leader Colum Eastwood and Sinn Féin Foyle MP Elisha McCallion, as well as a petition signed by thousands.

Lisa McGee, writer of hit Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls, also branded the decision "madness".

Mr Coyle formed a long-running partnership with legendary broadcaster Gerry Anderson and took over his 10.30am slot after Mr Anderson's death in 2014.

However, following the controversy it was revealed earlier this week that Mr Coyle (72) had been given a temporary reprieve and will return to present a new daily programme on Radio Foyle.

And yesterday BBC Radio Ulster confirmed that Mr Clements is to make his debut on the station on September 23, when he takes over the 10.30am show.

The public broadcaster said The Stephen Clements Show is part of the station's new weekday schedule, which will see the presenter "bring his unique sense of fun and chat".

The Carrickfergus man announced his departure from Q Radio in June after eight years at the commercial radio station.

"I’m absolutely thrilled and excited to be given this opportunity with the BBC," said Mr Clements.

"It has always been my dream to broadcast on the most respected, most creative media platform on the planet.

"I am looking forward to sharing some fun and lots of laughs with the amazing people of Northern Ireland."

Emma Dunseith from BBC NI said: "Stephen is a great broadcasting talent and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to the BBC Radio Ulster team.

"We’re excited to hear what he will bring to the station and we’re sure his show will be a great addition to the weekday schedule and reflect his bright and vibrant personality."
