Police have confirmed that a Co Down man reported as missing has died in a road crash.

Relatives of Christopher Casement (23) had appealed for information after he failed to turn up for work.

Mr Casement was last seen at around 7am on Tuesday and worried relatives had launched a social media campaign to try and locate him.

However, police confirmed on Wednesday night that a man killed in a one vehicle road traffic collision involving a blue Mazda 3 on the Old Ballynahinch Road area of Lisburn at around 12.20pm yesterday was Mr Casement.

The road was closed for a time but later reopened.

SDLP councillor John Trainor offered support to the family.

“It’s a very sad story and tragedy,” he said.

“My heart goes out to his family and my thoughts and prayers are with the family and if there’s anything I can do for them they need only ask.”

Sinn Féin councillor Oonagh Hanlon also offered her sympathies.

“I would pass my condolences to the family," she said.

"To lose anybody under any circumstances is always very tragic, particularly for someone at such a young age."
