Former Limavady councillor was committed to public service

A RETIRED Limavady councillor who died following an illness, has been described as a representative who was "committed to public service".

Florence Sloan, who was aged in her 80s, passed aware at Cornfield Care Centre on Sunday. Originally from the Ballykelly area, she had lived at Drumcovitt House, Feeny with her late husband, Frank and children, Mary and Chris.

A long-standing Ulster Unionist activist, Mrs Sloan was elected onto the newly created Limavady District Council in 1973 following the reform of local government.

After topping the poll in her ward, she was returned for a second term in local government elections in 1977. She was also a Justice of the Peace.

Former Ulster Unionist MP for East Derry, William Ross said Mrs Sloan had served with great distinction.

“Florence was always a most pleasant lady and always got on very well with people. She had a great public spirit and served on a number of public bodies,” the former MP said.

Mrs Sloan’s wake takes place at her late residence from noon to 9pm today. Her funeral will leave Drumcovitt House at 1.15pm tomorrow for a service at First Limavady Presbyterian church at 2pm followed by burial at Enagh cemetery.
