A Belfast Harbour Police (BHP) officer pleaded guilty today to perverting the course of justice.

Scott Harkins, whose address was given on court papers as c/o BHP Milewater Basin, Belfast, appeared at the city's crown court for a brief hearing.

At request of his defence barrister Ian Turkington, Harkins was re-arraigned on a second charge of perverting the course of justice and replied "guilty''.

The charge stated that between April 4 and April 7, 2018, Harkins "falsified evidence in a speeding investigation, by amending his statement of evidence'' and that of another BHP officer "to state that the speedometer of the police vehicle used in the investigation was tested for accuracy prior to the end of duty on the date of the investigation''.

It added that this falsified statement was then submitted to a BHP sergeant with the "intention to pervert the course of justice''.

Prosecution barrister Philip Henry asked for a count of a similar nature to be "left on the books in the ususal terms''.

Judge Patricia Smyth released Harkins on continuing bail, saying she would sentence him early next week.
